User Manual for Electronic and Mechanical Outside Micrometers

1. What is an outside micrometer? Structure of an outside micrometer

An outside micrometer is a measuring instrument used to perform precise measurements on the object to be measured. The micrometer's size determination mechanism works based on a rotating shaft that adjusts the movement of the measuring head and the scale.

The key feature of an outside micrometer is its extremely high accuracy (up to 0.0005 mm), which allows it to measure small distances down to one-thousandth of a millimeter. Used to measure the size and outer diameter of parts, micrometers have different types of measuring tips for use on parts with specific locations and shapes. The geometric structure of the spindle or measuring sleeve will meet the requirements of each individual workpiece.

Structure of a micrometer

A basic micrometer consists of the following parts:

  • Measuring jaw (anvil): Measuring shaft or measuring head. Basically, the micrometer will have 2 parts of the measuring shaft, one fixed as a support point.
  • Movable measuring head (spindle): Main measuring shaft or measuring head (the term "measuring head" may not be accurate). This shaft moves and shifts according to the movement of the scale and the workpiece. This measuring shaft determines the measuring range of the scale.
  • Locking screw/lock (lock): Lock the scale travel. Usually, it is a light fingertip lever to lock the measuring shaft travel.
  • Main scale body (sleeve): Main sleeve, this sleeve encloses the measuring shaft and has a scale on it. This sleeve indicates the displacement value or the actual size of the object being measured.
  • Auxiliary scale body (thimble): Auxiliary sleeve, rotating movement, this can be considered as the auxiliary scale or the place to indicate the fractional value of the measured value. The scale on the Thimble will show the fractional value of the measurement.
  • Knob/rotary knob (ratchet knob): Rotary knob, adjusted by the user, to apply pressure to the measuring shaft against the workpiece.
  • Handle/frame (frame): Frame of the micrometer, a C-shaped clamp mechanism. The clamp or frame has a solid structure, where all the other parts of the scale are attached.

2. Classification of outside micrometers

Micrometers come in many sizes: 0 – 25 mm, 25 – 50 mm, 50 – 75 mm, 75 – 100 mm, 100 – 125 mm, 125 – 150 mm… The unit of measurement is usually mm or inches.

If classified by thread pitch, there are:

  • Micrometers with a 1mm thread pitch, the sub-scale is divided into 100 divisions.
  • Micrometers with a 0.5 mm thread pitch, the sub-scale of the moving scale is divided into 50 divisions.

Based on the method of displaying the measurement result, there are the following types:

  • Electronic (digital) micrometers
  • Mechanical micrometers
  • Micrometers with a mechanical counter.

In addition, they can be classified according to the specific use of the micrometer, such as standard micrometers, flat-tipped micrometers, pointed-tip micrometers, thread pitch micrometers, tube thickness micrometers, caliper-type micrometers, limiting micrometers, etc.
